The Global Short Story Competition

And who are we looking for?
Well, we are not looking for the big names of the literary world, rather the talented authors who remain to be discovered, the voices which are as yet unheard, the stories as yet untold, the writers ignored by the publishing industry.

The Internet gives writers the opportunity to have their voice heard and there are plenty of examples of authors who have gone on to writing careers after their work was first aired on the worldwide web. One of our previous competition winners is currently negotiating a two-book deal.

So, we are inviting stories by writers from any country in the world, to be judged by an experienced panel of writers.

Chair of the judging panel for the competition will be writer Fiona Cooper, a published novelist and short story writer who lives in Northumberland, North-East England.

She has published eight novels, mainly with Serpent's Tail, including Rotary Spokes, Jay Loves Lucy and A Skyhook in the Midnight Sun, which is based in Newcastle. Her work ranges from comedy to fantasy and she has contributed short stories to numerous collections, including Passion Fruit (Pandora) and Such Devoted Sisters (ed. Shena McKay), as well as publishing a collection of short stories, I Believe in Angels. Several of these have been translated into German and Catalan.

She has performed in most cities in the UK as well as Paris and Valletta. Fiona has also appeared on BBC Radio programmes and her work has been dramatised on Radio 4.
